Forward? Forward! Forward…
Duration: December 2018 - April 2019
Elizabeth was commissioned to co-curate a five month long art exhibition with Ulrich Wolff from the Stellenbosch University Museum as part of their 100 year celebrations.
This Centenary exhibition for the University is the result of an open call for artists to propose artworks that reimagine the future of higher education in Africa and at the University in Stellenbosch. More than 250 proposals were received from artists in countries as far as India and Germany. A panel then selected artworks to exhibit, resulting in a group of more than sixty artists.
Chosen works interpreted the theme to address relevant issues of identity, cultural perspectives, mentorship, literacy, human-to-human connectivity, language, social systems, campus power struggles and the Anthropocene.
A series of walkabouts were presented by the two curators over the five month long exhibition.
Media included: installation, animation, performance art, stone carving, sculpture, painting, video, print media, photography and kinetic sculpture.
Elizabeth Miller-Vermeulen and Ulrich Wolff compiled exhibition material and this was published in a commemorative publication to augment the exhibition. In a transformative, collaborative concept, essays by authors from the Institute for Futures Research, under the direction of Dr Morne Mostert, are included in the publication.
Participating artists included: Willem Boshoff, Chris Soal, Wim Botha, Pierre le Riche, Willie Bester, Sthenjwa Luthuli, Liza Grobler, Johann Louw, Emma Willemse, Ingrid Bolton, Sinalithemba Ntuli, Claudette Schreuders, Conrad Botes, Stephané E. Conradie, Ashley Walters, Tamlin Blake, Gordon Froud, Lhlola Amira, Norman O'Flynn, Spier Arts Academy and Marlise Keith collaboration, Jessica Storm Kapp, Dan Halter, Anton Kannemeyer, Zyma Amien and Heidi Fourie.
